Most states, including Florida, have a Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program, the program is designed to help first time driver’s permit applicants to become safe and more responsible drivers. Under the GDL program, first time applicants are required to complete various milestones before obtaining a full driver’s license.  One of the first milestones before obtaining your unrestricted driver’s license is obtaining your driver’s permit; however, you will be required to take a Florida Written Permit Test and pass before you are issued with a driver’s permit.

After you have all the required documents and you are ready to take your written permit test, you have a number of options to take the test:

You can take your exam online if you completed an approved online Driver’s Ed course. After successfully completing the course and passing the exam, the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) will be notified electronically by your Driver’s Ed provider. Make sure you bring the required documents to your nearest DHSMV office after passing your exam so that you are issued with your driver’s permit. Alternatively, you can also take your Florida Permit Test in Person. To take the test in person visit your local DHSMV office with the recommended documents, you will be given the test.

The Florida written permit test is a two multiple choice test that is composed of 50 questions covering Floridatraffic laws, road signs, parking, switching lanes and signaling, defensive driving, how to react in the event of an accident or emergency, and how to enter and exit the freeway. To pass the test, you will need to answer at least 40 questions correctly. However, if you fail the test you will need to pay a $10 retesting fee before you can retake the test.

The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles recommends studying the Florida Driver’s Manual while preparing for your test, though this is a good option, you can also take online practice test while preparing.  A combination of these two is a sure way to prepare for the test as it can be challenging.
