Getting your New York learner’s permit is the first step in the graduated driver’s licensing program. However, you will have to take and pass a written permit test.
The New York learner’s permit consists of a 20 multiple choice questions. The questions are mainly derived from the New York Driver’s Manual. The questions cover a number of topics which include: Road signs, intersections, turns, and road signals, parallel parking, what to do in the event of an accident or emergency, defensive driving techniques, New York traffic laws, vehicle safety, vehicle positioning, signaling and communicating to other drivers, sharing the road, entering and exiting the freeway and lane use. To pass the written permit test, you need to correctly answer 14 questions.
To prepare for the written test, you can study the New York driver license manual. The manual will give a comprehensive knowledge off all you need to know about the questions in the written test. However there are other study materials like the online practice tests. A combination of the two will help you test your knowledge about the rules of the road in New York, familiarize with the format of the actual exam and learn what it takes to pass the written test. In addition to the written permit test you will also need to take a vision screening test. When you pass these tests and pay the recommended fee you will be issued with your driver’s permit.
After preparing and you are ready for the test, visit local NY DMV office with the required documents and you will be given the written permit test. You should not be worried if you do not pass the test on your firs attempt, the New York DMV has no limitations on the number of times you can retake the test.
