Your New York driving record (driving record abstract) shows important information about your driving history.  There are different types of driving records in New York, which include: Certified abstract from the NY DMV, masked driving record abstract, non-certified driving record from third-party providers, title abstract and registration abstract. All driver record abstracts from the New York DMV show your:

  • Personal information: Name, date of birth, and mailing address.
  • Driver information: Driver license class, status, expiration, endorsements, and restrictions.
  • Driving history (current year, and past 3 years): Accidents, moving violations, suspensions, and revocations.
  • Alcohol related convictions from the past 10 years or beyond (depending on the conviction).

You can order for a copy of your driving record online, by telephone, by mail, or in person.  To order online, visit MyDMV Get My Driving Record application portal, create your MyDMV account and provide the information requested. To order by phone, call the NY DMV at (518) 486-9786 and provide your NY driver’s license information. You will receive your driving record in 2 weeks by mail. To order for your driving record by mail, you will need a completed Request for Driving Record Information (Form MV-15) and proof of identity, send the information to the address listed on the form. To order in person, visit your local NY DMV office with a completed Request for Driving Record Information (Form MV-15C) and proof of identity. Your request will take about 2 weeks to be processed. The state does not provide free driving record, the following are charges for obtaining your driving record: online-$7, by phone-$5 plus and additional search fee of $10, in person and by mail-$10.

You can only order another driver’s driving record with their written consent and the request cannot be done online or by email, it must be by mail or in person. For more information visit the New York Department of Motor Vehicles.
