The New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) requires all new drivers’ license applicants to complete the graduated driver license (GDL) program prior to getting their driver’s license. The GDL program is designed to slowly introduce traffic situations to new driver’s license applicants and help them become safe and  more responsible drivers. The first step in the GDL program is obtaining an instructional permit; however, you will first have to take a written permit test before being issued the permit. If you are below 18 years old, you will also be required to successfully complete a MVD approved Driver’s Ed course before obtaining your instruction permit.

The New Mexico written permit test contains a series of multiple choice questions. The questions are mainly derived from the New Mexico Driver Manual. The test touches on a number of topics which include: New Mexico traffic laws, road signs, vehicle safety, defensive driving, vehicle positioning, signaling and communicating to other drivers, parking, sharing the road, road signage, entering and exiting the freeway, lane use, and accident and emergency procedures. You need a passing score of 80% to pass the written permit test.

To prepare for the written test, the New MexicoMVD recommends reading the New Mexico Driver Manual. The manual contains comprehensive information of what will be set in the test, making it a good way to prepare for the test. However, reading through the whole manual can be tiresome; you can therefore opt for online practice tests. The online practice tests will help you gauge how you will score in the real test, it will help you get familiar with how questions in the test are structured, it will enable you review all the information that you need to know for the test and finaly help you identify your areas of strengths and weaknesses.

It is worth noting that if you complete your Driver’s Ed course at a MVD-contracted school, the written permit test will be part of the course. The driver’s education school may possibly also issue your learner’s permit when you complete the Driver’s Ed course.
