Mississippi Learner’s Permit

Car accident rates among teen drivers in Mississippi are ranked among the highest in the country. Alarming statistics like this has led to Mississippi introducing a graduated driver licensing (GDL) program to help teens be more responsible driver. Under the GDL, teens must reach certain age- and experience-related milestone before they can get an unrestricted driver’s license. The first step on your path to getting a Mississippi driver’s license is to obtain your learner’s permit.

Limited Learner’s Permit

If you are 14 years old and you have enrolled in a Driver’s Ed course, you are eligible to apply for a limited learner’s permit. You will need to visit your local MS DPS office with the following documents:

  • A complete application form.
  • Provide your Social Security Number
  • Your birth certificate
  • Submit a DL – Application Supplement Under 17
  • Prove that you are enrolled in a  Driver’s Ed course
  • Pay the $7 learner’s permit fee

 

Standard Learner’s Permit

You have to be at least 15 year to apply for a Standard Learner’s Permit. To apply you will need to visit a Mississippi DPS office with the following documents:

 
In addition to the above requirements, you will need to pass the DMV written test and vision test.

With your Mississippi learner’s permit you can only drive a vehicle under the supervision of a licensed driver who must be more than 21 years old and seated next to the driver seat.

Mississippi Provisional License

To be eligible for your Mississippi Provisional License, you must have held your learner’s permit for more than one year. To apply, visit your local Mississippi Department of Public Safety office with the following documents:

    • A completed application form.  It must be signed by your parent.
    • Provide your learner’s permit.
    • Present your Social Security card.
    • Provide your birth certificate
    • Submit a DL – Application Supplement Under 17
    • Pay the $11 intermediate driver’s license fee.

     
    In addition to the above requirements you will have to pass a driving test.
