Colorado Drivers License
In Colorado, the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires that before getting your driver’s license you to first obtain a learner’s permit if you are under 21 years old. There are different learner’s permits you can apply for depending on your age.
Colorado Learner’s Permit Requirements
As mentioned earlier, the type of learner’s permit you can apply for depends on your age: if you are between 15 to 15 ½ years old you can only apply for a Driver education learner’s permit, if you are between 15 ½ to 16 years old you can apply for a Driver awareness learner’s permit and if you are between 16 to 21 years old you can apply for a Minor learner’s permit.
Driver Education Learner’s Permit
If you are between the ages of 15 to 15 ½ years old, you can only apply for a driver education learner’s permit, which is valid for a period of 3 years. On the other hand, before you can obtain a driver education learner’s permit, you have to go through Driver’s Education program and it must have been completed in the last 6 months prior to your application.
Driver Awareness Permit
If you are between the ages of 15 ½ to 16 years old, you eligible for driver awareness permit which is valid for a period of 3 years. For you to apply for a driver awareness permit, you must complete: Driver’s Education, Pre-qualification driver awareness program (4 hours) or a Classroom study course (30 hours) which can be completed online.
When applying for a Driver Awareness Permit you will need to visit a Colorado DMV licensing office and:
- Submit proof of identity.
- Provide your Social Security number.
- Pass the written permit test and vision exam.
- Submit a completed Affidavit of Liability and Guardianship (Form DR 2460).
- Provide proof of completion for Driver’s Education, Pre-qualification driver awareness program or a Classroom study course
- Pay the $14 fee.
If you are below 18 years, your driver permit only allows you to drive under the supervision of an adult above the age of 21 years who must have a valid driver’s license.
