Minnesota Driver’s Permits

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety is responsible for issuing of driver’s permits; it has a graduated driver’s licensing (GDL) system that is a requirement for all teen drivers before they get a full driver’s license. GDL has various milestones that require teens to complete before they can become fully licensed drivers. The first stage in the graduated driver’s licensing system is obtaining a learner’s permit which allows you to driver while being monitored.

Minnesota Learner’s Permit

You have to be at least 15 years old to be eligible to apply for a Minnesota learner’s permit. In addition you must be enrolled in the behind-the-wheel and have completed the classroom components of a Driver’s Ed course. Before you get your learner’s permit you will have to pass a written knowledge test and a vision test. They are done at exam stations throughout the state.

After passing the tests you can apply for your learner’s permit. You will need the following documents:

  • Proof that you have done the written permit test and passed
  • A completed permit application form. They must be signed by your parents.
  • Payment for the $14.25 learner’s permit fee.

In addition to the above requirements, you will also need to pass a vision test when you apply for your learner’s permit.

While holding your Minnesota Learner’s Permit, you have to drive under the following restrictions: you can only drive when supervised by a driver who is more than 21 years and has a valid driver’s license and you cannot use a mobile phone while driving unless it is an emergency.

Minnesota Intermediate License

You must be at least 16 years to be eligible for your Minnesota Intermediate License. In addition, you must have held your learner’s permit for more than six months, while holding your learner’s permit you must not have been involved in any moving, alcohol, or drug violations, you must have complete the required supervised driving hours (50 hours of supervised driving  with 15 hours being at night) and complete Driver’s Ed.

When applying for your intermediate license you will need the following: in addition to the requirements when applying for a learner’s permit you will need a certificate of completion from your behind-the-wheel instructor and payment for the $17.25 license fee.
