South Dakota Learner’s Permits

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety (DPS) is responsible for issuing of learner’s permits. The DPS has implemented a graduated driver license (GDL) program whose main objective is to help teenagers became more responsible drivers. The GDL has various milestones which every teen must complete before obtaining a full South Dakota driver’s license.

South Dakota Instruction Permit

To apply for an instructional permit in South Dakota, you must be at least 14 years old. To apply, you will need to visit your local South Dakota DPS office and submit the following documents:

  • A completed application form
  • A Parental Consent Form completed by your parent or legal guardian (if you are younger than 18 years old)
  • Proof of identity (U.S passport, U.S birth certificate)
  • Proof of your social security  number
  • Two documents with proof of South Dakota residency (a pay stub, school report card)
  • Pay the $20 permit fee

 
In addition to the above requirements, you will also have to pass a vision test and a written test.

While holding your South Dakota instruction permit, you are only allowed to drive between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. You will also have to be supervised by a licensed driver who is at least 18 years old and has been licensed for a minimum of 1 year. You can only drive between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. under the supervision of your parent or legal guardian and they must be seated next to the driver seat.

Restricted Minor’s Permit

For you to apply for a South Dakota restricted minor’s permit, you must have held your instruction permit for more than six months and in that period you should not have been convicted of any traffic violations.

To apply, visit your local SD DPS office with your parent or legal guardian (if you are under 18 years) and submit:

  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of your social security number
  • Proof of South Dakota residency
  • Certificate of completion for an approved Driver’s Ed course, you must have score at least 80% and it should not be more than one year old
  • Pass a driving test

 

Your restricted minor’s permit is valid for a period of five years and it if free if you are upgrading from your instruction permit.
