Drivers Permits in Utah

According to the Utah Safety Council, motor vehicle crashes are the number one killer of teens. Alarming statistics like this have prompted Utah to start Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program. Under the GDL program, teens must reach certain age- and experience-related milestones before you can graduate to an unrestricted driver’s license. Obtain your Utah learner’s permit is the first steps on your path to your Utah driver’s license.

Utah Learner’s Permit

In Utah, there are driving requirements based on age.

Age 15 – 17

If you are between 15 to 17 years old, you must:

    • Have parental consent.
    • Pass the written permit test.
    • Complete a Driver’s Ed course.
    • Complete at least 40 hours of practice driving, including 10 hours at night.
    • Pass a driving skills test.

     

    Age 18

    If you are 18 years old you must:

    • Pass the written permit test.
    • Complete an approved Driver’s Ed course.
    • Pass a driving skills test.

    Age 19

    If you are 19 years old you must:

    • Pass the written permit test.
    • Pass the driving skills test.
    • Complete 40 hours of practice driving including 10 hours at night.

    To apply, visit your local driver license office with the following documents:

    • A completed Learner Permit Application (Form DLD 6A).
    • Proof of identity
    • Proof of U.S citizenship
    • Proof of social security number
    • Proof of residency (two documents)
    • Payment for the $15 learner’s permit fee.

     

    Full Unrestricted Utah Driver License

    To apply for your unrestricted driver’s license, you must meet the following requirements:

    • You must be at least 16 years old
    • You must have completed 40 hours of behind-the-wheel practice, with 10 hours being at night
    • You must have held your learner’s permit for more than six months or 90 days if you are 18 years old or older.

    To apply, visit your local driver’s license office and submit the following documents:

    • Proof of completion of your driver’s education program
    • A completed Driver License Application (Form DLD6A), the form must be signed by your parent or legal guardian
    • Proof of identity
    • Proof of Utah residency
    • Proof of your social security number
    • Have your photo taken
    • Complete a medical questionnaire
    • pass a vision test
    • pass a road test
    • pay the $30 driver license fee

     
    You driver license will be mailed in 6 weeks; however, you will be issued with a temporary driver’s license.
