In Utah, the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) has a Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program, the program is designed to help first time driver’s permit applicants to become safe and more responsible drivers. Under the GDL program, first time applicants are required to complete certain age- and experience-related milestonesbefore obtaining a full driver’s license.  One of the first milestones before obtaining your unrestricted driver’s license is obtaining your driver’s permit; however, you will be required to take a written permit test before you are issued with a driver’s permit.

If you are a new Utah resident and you have an out-of-state driver’s license or learner’s permit, you may transfer it to a Utah learner’s permit. You must hold your Utah learner’s permit for more than 180 days before you can apply for a driver’s license.  If you had previously taken a Driver’s Ed course in your previous state, you will be required to show proof of completion before applying for a license, butnot for your permit

To prepare for the written test, the Utah MVD recommends reading the Utah Driver Manual. The manual contains comprehensive information of what will be set in the test, making it a good way to prepare for the test. However, reading through the whole manual can be tiresome; you can therefore opt for online practice tests. The online practice tests will help you gauge how you will score in the real test, it will help you get familiar with how questions in the test are structured, it will enable you review all the information that you need to know for the test and finally help you identify your areas of strengths and weaknesses.  A combination of the two methods will guarantee that you pass the test on your first attempt. However, if you fail the test you will have to wait for 5 business days before you can retake it.

If you are ready to take the test, visit your local DMV office with the required documents and take the test. It is advisable that you book an appointment to reduce the waiting time.
