Drivers Permits in Pennsylvania

The state of Pennsylvania has implemented a Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program in an effort to reduce the amount of accidents involving teen drivers. The Pennsylvania GDL is designed to help teenagers become more responsible driver, obtaining your Pennsylvania learner’s permit is one of the first steps on your path to your driver’s license.

Pennsylvania Learner’s Permit

You must be at least 16 years to be eligible to apply for your Pennsylvania learner’s permit. It is always advisable to make an appointment before heading down to a driver license center. You will need to present the following documents:

  • A completed Non-Commercial Learner’s Permit Application (Form DL-180); the form must be completed by your parent or legal guardian if you are below 18 years old.
  • A completed Parent or Guardian Consent Form (Form DL-180TD); the form must be signed by your parent or legal guardian.
  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of Pennsylvania residency
  • Your Social Security card
  • A check or money order of $34.50 payable to PennDOT

 
In addition to the above requirements, you will need to pass a vision screening and a written permit test.

While holding your learner’s permit you are only allowed to drive under the supervision of a licensed driver who must be at least 21 years old and you must properly wear a seat belt at all times. In addition, you are not allowed to drive with any other passenger apart from your immediate family members.

Pennsylvania Provisional License

The next step is to obtain your provisional license or junior driver’s license. It allows you to drive unsupervised but with some restrictions. You are eligible to apply for your junior driver’s license if you have held your learner’s permit for more than six months and completed 65 hours of practice driving, with 10 hours being at night and 5 hours in bad weather.

To apply for your provisional license, you will need to visit your local PennDOT office in person and pass the driving test. In addition, you will need to submit:

  • Your learner’s permit
  • A completed Parent Certification Form (Form DL-180C)
  • Proof of your vehicle registration and car insurance
  • Your supervising driver driver’s license

 
You must hold your provisional license for more than one year before you apply for your Senior Driver’s License.
