Drivers Permits in Oklahoma

One of the reasons why Oklahoma’s Department of Public Safety (DPS) has implemented a Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program is because teens are involved in fatal accidents than any other age group. The GDL program is meant to help teenagers be more responsible drivers as they progress in the different milestones required. Obtaining a learner’s permit is the first step towards getting your Oklahoma driver’s license.

Oklahoma Learner’s Permit

You can begin driving at the age of 15 years in Oklahoma; the GDL program will apply to you until you are 18 years old. However, the requirements of obtaining your learner’s permit differ depending on your age.

15 Years Old

At 15 years you can begin driving on condition that you are enrolled in Driver’s Ed and under the instruction of a certified Driver’s Ed instructor. However, you are not allowed to apply for a learner’s permit.

15 ½ Years Old

You are eligible to apply for a learner’s permit when you are at least 15 ½ years old, but you must fulfill one of the following conditions. You must have completed a driver’s education course or you have enrolled in Driver’s Ed and currently receiving instruction.

16 to 18 Years and Older

At 16 years old, you can apply for a learner’s permit without taking Driver’s Ed. You will need to pass a vision and written test. You must hold your learner’s permit for a minimum of 30 days before applying for a driver’s license.

To obtain your learners permit you will need to visit the Department of Public Safety and submit:

  • Proof of primary ID (valid U.S passport, certification of naturalization)
  • Proof of secondary ID (Oklahoma employment ID, health insurance card)
  • Proof of social security number
  • Proof of enrollment in  an approved Driver’s Ed course(if you are 15 ½ years old)
  • A school letter to prove that you are enrolled in school and a referenced reading test if you are in the 8th grade (for 15 and 16 year olds)

While holding your learner’s permit, you can only drive under the supervision of a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old, furthermore, he must be seating next to the driver seat.

Intermediate License

Once you turn 16 years old and have held your learner’s permit for more than six months, you are eligible to apply for an Oklahoma intermediate license. To apply you will need to make an Oklahoma road test appointment and provide the DPS with the following documents:

To apply for an unrestricted driver license you must have held your intermediate license for more than six months and have not had any convictions within that time.
