Ohio Driver’s Permits

The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) is responsible for issuing of driver’s permits. However to be eligible you have to meet the following qualifications:

  • Be at least 15 ½ years old
  • You must personally visit an Ohio BMV office
  • Provide proof of identity, legal presence in U.S, and date of birth
  • Pass the written permit test
  • Pay the $22 learner’s permit fee

You can also convert your valid out-of-state driver’s permit to an Ohio permit if you have recently moved to Ohio.

Ohio Learner’s Permit

You must be at least 15 ½ in order to get your Ohio learner’s permit, or TIPIC. To apply for your learner’s permit, visit your local OH BMV office and submit:

  • A document showing your name and date of birth ( birth certificate, certified copy of a court order)
  • Proof of Social Security number
  • Proof of legal U.S presence
  • Proof of Ohio residency
  • Pass the vision exam
  • Pass the written permit test
  • If you have any relevant medical conditions, you will need to complete the medical packet
  • Pay the $22 fee

 
While holding your Ohio learner’s permit, you will have to adhere to certain restrictions depending on your age: if you are 15 ½ years old, you are only permitted to drive under the supervision of your parent, guardian or a licensed driver and they must be seated next to the driver seat. If you are 16 years old, you may only drive under the supervision of a licensed drive that is at least 21 years old. If you are under 18 years old, you are not allowed to drive between 12 a.m. and 6 a.m.

Probationary Driver’s License

You can only apply for a probationary driver’s license if you are at least 16 years old, have held your learners permit for more than six months, have proof of completing an OH driver’s education course and you have completed the recommended 50 hours of supervised driving with 10 hours completed at night ( you will be required to provide a Fifty Hour Affidavit (Form BMV 5791).

If you meet the above requirements, contact the OH BMV and schedule a driving test, you will also be required to provide your learner’s permit and the required payment.
