North Dakota Learner’s Permits

In North Dakota if you are applying for your first driver’s license, the Department of Transportation will first provide you with an instruction permit so that you practice driving. Your instruction permit only allows you to drive under supervision of a licensed driver and it helps you to prepare for your road test.

North Dakota Learner’s Permit

You must be at least 14 years old and have your parent’s approval/consent (if you are below 18 years old) to be eligible for a North Dakota learner’s permit.

To apply for your learner’s permit, visit a North Dakota DOT office with the following documents:

  • A completed application form, your parent or guardian must sign the form
  • Proof of name and date of birth
  • Proof of legal U.S presence
  • Proof of North Dakota residency
  • Pass a vision test
  • Pass the written permit test
  • Pay the $15 fee

 
While holding your North Dakota Learner’s Permit, you can only drive while accompanied by an adult who is at least 18 years and has had a valid driver’s license for the past 3 years.  Your supervising driver must always be seated next to the driver seat and no other passenger is allowed to occupy the seat. In addition, you must always be in possession of your learner’s permit at all times while driving.

Restricted Provisional License

For you to apply for a North Dakota minor’s restricted driver’s license you must be at least 15 years, you must have completed 50 hours of practice driving and Driver’s Ed (if you are younger than 16 years old) and you must have held your learner’s permit for more than 1 year or until you are 16 years old (for 14 and 15 year olds), more than six months or until you are 18 years old (if you are under 18 years old).

To apply for your Restricted Provisional License, visit your local ND DOT office and provide the following documents:

  • Certification from your parents that you have completed the required 50 hours of practice driving.
  • Pass your driving test.
  • Pass a DMV written test, safe driving practices
  • Pay the $15 fee.
