Whether you are an employer, law enforcement officer, insurance company or a North Carolina driver you can obtain a driving record through the NC Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). There are three types of driving records in North Carolina: Certified true copy, which includes your complete NC driver history and is used for court and legal proceedings, a non-certified complete extract copy which contains your complete NC driver history and is used by insurance companies and employers for background checks, the last one is a non-certified limited extract copy that has 3 years of your driving history in North Carolina. Your driving record contains your personal information, any felony convictions you have had, your NC driver’s license suspensions, revocations, cancellations, traffic accidents and violations.
You can order for a copy of your driving record online, in person or by mail. To order for a copy of your driving record online, visit the NC DMV online services page and provide your driver license number, date of birth, Social Security number (SSN) and our NC DMV online PIN. It is important to note that the driving records obtained online are non-certified and cannot be used for official purposes. To obtain your driving record in person or by mail, you will need a completed Driver Privacy Protection Act Request Form (DL-DPPA-1). The state does not offer free driving record; the fee payable depends on which driving record you order for. For a certified driving record, the charges are $11 and non-certified driving record $8.
