New Hampshire Driver’s Permits
In New Hampshire, the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is responsible for issue driver’s licenses. The New Hampshire DMV does not directly issue learner’s permits if you want to begin driving. You will only be allowed to practice driving if you are old enough and when you follow certain restrictions. After successfully passing all the milestones and you are ready to take your road test, you can apply for your driver’s license.
New Hampshire Youth Operator License
Practice Driving – Age 15 1/2
As stated above, learner’s permits are not issued in New Hampshire. However, you may practice driving if you are at least 15 ½ years old but under the supervision of a licensed supervising driver who is at least 25 years old. For you to practice driving, you must always have proof of your age while practicing driving, practice driving only in a non-commercial passenger vehicle and have your parent, guardian or an adult supervise who is at least 25 years old and has a valid driver license supervise you while you drive.
Applying for Your License – Age 16
When you turn 16 years old, you are eligible to take a road test and get your Youth Operator License. However, you will have to complete a DMV approved driver’s education course and at least 40 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours driven at night.
To apply, visit your local New Hampshire DMV office while accompanied by your parents to take your knowledge and vision tests. Make sure you get there before 3:30 p.m. the New Hampshire DMV does not make appointments but has a 3:30 p.m. cut-off time for walk-ins.
At the DMV office you will have to submit the following:
- A completed Application for Driver’s License (Form DSMV450)
- Two documents with proof of identity
- Proof of completion from your Driver’s Ed course
- Submit your Driver’s Out-of-Class Log Sheet (Form DSMV 509); it must have your parent’s or guardian’s signature.
- Submit a Parent or Guardian Authorization Certificate (Form DSMV 38); it must be signed by your parent or guardian to prove they gave you their consent.
- Pass the knowledge test
- Pass the vision test
