Driver’s Permits in Nevada

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires all new drivers to first obtain their instruction permit or learner’s permit before they can obtain a full driver’s license. If you are 18 years old and below you will be required to pass a DMV approved driver’s education program.

Nevada Learner’s Permit

To apply for your learner’s permit in Nevada, you must be at least 15 ½ years old. To apply, visit your local Nevada DMV office and submit the following documents:

• A completed Driver’s License, Driver Authorization Card, or Identification Card Application (Form DMV-002). The form must be signed by your parent or guardian.
• Proof of identity
• Proof of Social Security number
• Pass your vision test
• Pass the written permit test
• Pay the $22.25 licensing fee, plus an addition of $25 testing fee.

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles will take 10 business days to process and mail your learner’s permit.

While holding your Nevada learner’s permit, you must drive under supervision of your parent or a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old and has been driving for at least 1 year.

Nevada Driver’s License

Before you can apply for your Nevada driver’s license, you must meet the following requirements:

• You must be at least 16 years old
• You must have completed the required  50 hours of driving practice, with 10 hours being at night
• You must have held your learner’s permit for more than six months
• You must have a clean driving record (with no accidents, moving violations or alcohol and drug convictions)
• Successfully complete driver’s education

To apply, visit your local driver’s license office and submit:

• Proof of your parent’s or guardian’s consent
• Your Driver’s Ed certificate of completion
• A completed Beginning Driver Experience Log (Form DLD130)
• Your Nevada learner’s permit
• Proof of your identity
• A properly insured and registered vehicle, for a driving test

When holding your Nevada Driver’s License, during the first six months you cannot transport any other person apart from your family members. If you are below 18 years old you cannot drive between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. unless you are driving to or from school or work.
