Louisiana GDL Program

In Louisiana, the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) requires that all teenage drivers enroll in the graduated driver’s licensing (GDL) program before obtaining an unrestricted driver’s license. The GDL program has different programs that are designed to help teens become more responsible drivers.

Louisiana Learner’s Permit

You must be at least 15 years old to be eligible for a Louisiana learner’s permit. Furthermore, you must have completed a driver’s education class consisting of 30 hours of classroom time and 8 hours of driving time.

To apply visit any Louisiana OMV office with the following:

• Proof of your identity.
• A Driver’s Ed certificate of completion.
• A Certificate of Required School Attendance Form.
• A completed application form.
• Payment for the $21.50 fee

 
In addition, you have to pass a vision screening and a written knowledge test

While holding a Louisiana learner’s permit, you must be supervised while driving. The supervising driver must be at least 21 years old or a sibling who is at least 18 years old and must have a valid driver’s license.

Intermediate Driver License

You will be able to upgrade to an intermediate license if you have a learner’s permit and meet the following requirements: you must be at least 16 years, you must have had your learner’s permit for more than six months and you must prove that you successfully completed a total of 50 hours of supervised driving, including 15 hours of night time driving.

In addition, you will be required to pass a road test with the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV). Before you take your test with the LA OMV, you will need to provide your own car and it should have a current safety inspection sticker, valid registration sticker and certificate and proof of LA car insurance.

After passing the road test, you will need to visit a Louisiana DMV office and provide your learner’s permit, birth certificate, a Certificate of Required Attendance from your school, pass a vision test and pay $13 upgrade fee (additional local fee, up to $4). Payments made by e-checks and credit/debit card usually incur an additional fee.
