The Arizona Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) is responsible for issuing out driver’s permits to first time applicants. Under the graduated driver licensing (GDL) program, first time applicant are required to complete certain milestones which includes applying for a learner’s permit as the first step toward obtaining their unrestricted driver’s license and completing a driver’s education course. There are three main stages under the GDL program, which include obtaining:

  • learner’s permit or Instruction permit
  • Provisional license or Graduated restricted driver’s license
  • Full, unrestricted driver’s license.

For you to obtain your driver’s permit you will need to take a written permit test.To take the test you will have to visit your local MVD office and book an appointment. The Arizona written permit test contains 30 questions that are all in multiple choices. The written test is designed to test the driver on a variety of operation procedures and driving laws.

While preparing for your written test you should consider reading through the basic practice tests and the Arizona Driver Manual provided by the Arizona MVD. For you to pass the test on your first attempt it is it advisable that you take an online practice test from certified provides. The practice test will test you on an array of questions from varying topics that your test may cover, these include vehicle safety, defensive driving, vehicle positioning, signaling and communicating to other drivers, parking, sharing the road, road signage, entering and exiting the freeway, lane use, and accident and emergency procedures.

Within 12 months of applying for your Arizona driver’s permit, you have a maximum of three attempts to pass the written permittest. If by any chance the 12 months pass or you fail 3 attempts of your exam, you will have to begin the application process over again and pay a new fee. However, you can retake the test as soon as the next business day.

It is important to note that if you hold an out-of-state driver’s license, the Arizona MVD will not request you to take a written test. However, your MVD representatives will make a ruling on that.
